A thousand-year-old tradition, bamboo basketry has evolved over the centuries thanks to trade with China, which introduced the bamboo objects essential to the art of tea, which the Japanese elite loved. At the end of the Edo period (1603-1868), master basket makers perfected their techniques and gave birth to a unique style. After the Second World War, some broke with functionalism and created abstract sculptures. Through works from the Mingei and NAEJ collections, this exhibition catalogue of the Departmental Museum of Asian Arts in Nice offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the beauty and complexity of bamboo basketry and to better understand the importance of this art in the cultural and historical context of Japan.
