Tradition & Perfection: Paper Cuttings from China & Switzerland

Author: Harald Kraemer

Publisher: Hong Kong University Press

USD $29.00

This publication accompanies two parallel exhibitions at the University Museum and Art Gallery and the Kunsthaus Interlaken, produced to highlight and document the significance of paper cutting across both cultures.

Paper cuttings have long captivated viewers with their expressive storytelling and remarkable precision. For the first time, Swiss paper cuttings from the Wyss Collection in Unterseen, Bern, are presented alongside Chinese paper cuttings from the collection of the University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, as well as works from the Guangling Paper Cutting Art Museum and the Jieyiyuan Paper Cutting Art Center in Pingyao, both in Shanxi Province.

The exhibitions highlight the diversity and distinctive cultural identities of this compelling art form. In 2009, Chinese paper cutting was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
