The Great Japan Exhibition: art of the Edo Period 1600-1868

This catalogue accompanies the Royal Academy of Arts’ major 1981–82 exhibition on the art of Edo-period Japan, the age of the Tokugawa shoguns (1615–1868). It explores the rich artistic culture that flourished during Japan’s long period of relative isolation, when social change and creative innovation reshaped the nation. Supported by the Japanese Government, the exhibition brings together paintings, prints, books, lacquerware, ceramics, metalwork, armour, sculpture and textiles, alongside selected works from the Momoyama period. The catalogue illustrates every exhibit, with more than 120 reproduced in colour. Essays by leading British and Japanese scholars, together with a glossary and comprehensive bibliography, make it an authoritative record of Edo art.
