Arts of Asia‘s outstanding Spring 2023 volume highlights impressive private and museum collections of Asian arts that range from popular subjects to less well-known but equally fascinating objects.

Highlighted on the cover is an elegant hanging basket by the great master Tanabe Chikuunsai I (1877–1937), whose beautiful creations are among the many incredible Japanese bamboo art in The Naej Collection.

Other captivating collections featured include a private collection of indigenous Indonesian art, explorer Roald Amundsen’s Japanese sword and armour, K.S. Lo’s Chinese tea ware, early cloisonné at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Goryeo celadons at the Art Institute of Chicago, and South Asian and Islamic art at the Brooklyn Museum.

We also look at some eccentric figures from humorously exaggerated ceramic figurines of China’s Eastern Han dynasty to Japan’s Kabuki idols, who were and remain important cultural ambassadors. This is followed by our beloved book reviews and Saleroom News Reports.
