Arts of Asia‘s outstanding Summer 2023 issue, in collaboration with the British Museum, highlights the blockbuster exhibition “China’s hidden century”.
This exhibition, which was four years in the making, shines light on China’s resilience and creativity during the 19th century—a period of changes and turmoil, and a pivotal time in the nation’s history. Less well-known, this was also a century of visual richness as exemplified by the diverse material culture of different groups, from the court to farmers and city dwellers, as discussed in our issue by curator Jessica Harrison-Hall and other distinguished authors.
We feature other fascinating Chinese art, such as the ancient nomadic art of North China, the artistic aspirations of the Jiajing Emperor, Sir Michael Butler’s dating debates surrounding 17th century porcelains, and modern and contemporary works by artists of Chinese descent.
Also included is an overview of ikat from the David Paly Collection along with a review of the art fair TEFAF Maastricht 2023, followed by our beloved book reviews and Saleroom News Reports.
