Arts of Asia‘s Autumn 2023 issue shines the spotlight on the remarkable Asian Art collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). It was a privilege to work with the MFAH, one of the most important and active museums in America.
We feature six impressive articles by the museum’s curators and specialists, including on the cover, the exquisite sarpech (turban ornament) of Nizam of Hyderabad. Other highlights include the newly opened Hossein Afshar Galleries for Art of the Islamic Worlds, doubling the previous gallery, and wonderful Indian textiles from the Parpia Collection, one of the finest private collections of South Asian textiles. We then take a deep dive into Japanese art at the museum with modern art from the Meiji period and zen paintings from the prestigious Gitter-Yelen Collection, and, turning to across the globe, a unique Japan-inspired biombo from Mexico.
Elsewhere, we look at the relationship between Japan and the American painter Sam Francis, Korean celadon and buncheong ware, and Ly-Tran ceramics from a private collection. This is followed by our beloved book reviews and Saleroom News Reports.
